One of the areas in which acupuncture has received great acclaim in recent years is the treatment of female infertility. There are times when western medical testing can identify a problem and overcome it with medicine or procedures.  When that is the case, everyone is happy and nature is free to take its’ course.  However, there are many instances when the reason for the infertility is illusive or when western medical procedures are not successful or practical.  It is in these situations when  families turn to acupuncture.

Upon examination, many of my infertility patients have conditions which obstruct or compromise the flow of chi and blood so essential to successful pregnancy.  These include hormonal imbalances, adrenal imbalances, anxiety and depression and diet induced deficiencies.  Many also present with structural imbalances of the lower back, hips and pelvis.

When we add compromised circulation (often due to obstruction) of the legs and thighs and the tightening of the musculature around the hips, it is easy to how efforts at pregnancy can be compromised.  So significant to the process of conception are these areas, that within the tradition of Japanese acupuncture, they are referred to as the muscles of pregnancy.
